The Healing Power of Writing

Writing is a great instrument of the soul. It is our singing voice of the heart—the orchestra of our imagination.

Every word has a sound, a frequency. Our thoughts and feelings have frequencies, as well as discordant energy that we seek to harmonize every single day of our lives. It is the nature of our reality living inside a complex world of opposites.

But that is who we are, colorful, creative, complex wonderful human beings, changing our minds and revisioning our lives.

Through the power of writing, we change the world we live in, healing ourselves along the way. A favorite quote by Robert Frost tells us,  “No tears in the writer, no tears in the reader. No surprise in the writer, no surprise in the reader.”

When we write, we are often surprised by our own self-discovery and the powerful healing layers it offers us. For example, how many of us have ever written an angry letter to someone never intending to send it?

I did this one time when I was hurt and angry at some friends who I felt betrayed me. The incident had stuck in my craw and I was shocked by my level of revenge. I decided to write down what I wouldn’t dare say to them in person and file it away.

When I expressed my thoughts and feelings, I unburdened my heart and mind. What took me by surprise was that the pain and confusion no longer belonged to me. I couldn’t believe the remarkable effect it had by the simple exercise of writing about it. I had healed my heart and my friendship without them ever knowing there was anything wrong!

A few months later when I came across the letter, I had completely forgotten that I had written it. It was as though an angel had rolled it up like a scroll and delivered it to a processing room where upon it was unfurled for immediate attention and healing. How miraculous was that?

As a sound healer and clairaudient, I happen to believe in angels, spirit guides and a Creator God with infinite possibilities. It is that healing world that I have found my greatest gifts to share. That was also how I came to write my first book, a memoir of my life’s experience in working with the spirit realm.

I had no intention of writing about my personal life and the more I protested against the idea, the more my spirit guides insisted upon it.

Finally, I had to give in, to trust myself and everything that I believed in. I asked them for the first word and they gave me “imagine.” That word began a long journey for me, one of tearful memories, astonishing miracles and a profound awakening to all the gifts of healing while writing.

The most prolific, delicious, jazziest thing in the whole world is our imagination. When we write, we are communicating directly with our soul’s imagination, our memories and our greatest desire to be heard. As dreamers and storytellers, we are automatically sending an invitation to our universal heart to co-create with us, to heal us, to love us.

As long as we are calling this “earth ship,” this beloved planet, our home for now, we will always be in communication with something. It is our choice in any given moment what that relationship will be.

The healing power of writing is one of the most extraordinary gifts we can imagine. As infinite co-creators, we will always have something to share with ourself and with others.

“To produce a mighty book, you must choose a mighty theme.”
Herman Melville

That “theme” is us—you and me.
